Bodoni poster

Experimental typography poster created using the Bodoni typeface.

Giambattista Bodoni was an Italian graphic designer and typographer who worked in Parma and created the Bodoni typeface in 1798. He sought to move away from the elaborate, decorative styles of earlier typefaces and wanted to reflect the neoclassical ideals of simplicity and order. Bodoni typeface main characteristics lie in the extreme contrast in the very fine serifs and in the perpendicular nature of the same with respect to the vertical lines. This dramatic variation in stroke weight gives Bodoni a distinctive and refined appearance, making it suitable for headings and display text, while vertical emphasis enhances legibility and creates a sense of sophistication.

This poster is designed using only Bodoni typeface elements and is based on the lithographic print of the Parma skyline from the 1800s.

“Plenty of white space and generous line spacing, and don’t make the type size too miserly. Then you will be assured of a product fit for a king.”

~ Giambattista BODONI
